‘Why don’t people just do what I pay them to do?’ – it’s a statement I hear a lot. Another alternative is ‘why don’t people ‘get it’’? As businesses grow, the internal organisation structure becomes more complex, the number of staff increases and managers and leaders are added just to keep track of everyone, keep them focused, performing etc. We find it curious that some people perform well and others don’t; and we’re often very slow to act on the evidence. My response to leaders in these situations is blunt. If people are not performing as needed it’s not their fault it’s yours! Leaders need to give absolute CLARITY on what is expected – for the role, the behaviours, the standards. They also need to demonstrate what great looks like, recognise great performance and call out poor performance – they need to drive clear Accountability and Performance.
